Usha Martin University Launches Centre for Ethics to Foster Integrity, Leadership, and Social Responsibility

Ranchi, August 14, 2025: Usha Martin University (UMU) today inaugurated its Centre for Ethics, in the presence of the Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Prabhat Kumar, former Governor of Jharkhand and Chief Guest of the programme Dr. Amit Mukherjee who was also invited to deliver the inaugural lecture. The event marked a significant step in UMU’s mission to promote integrity, moral reasoning, and ethical leadership among students, faculty, and the wider community.

Welcoming the guests, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor spoke about the increasing importance of ethics in education and professional life, especially in a world facing complex challenges and rapid change. Addressing the gathering, Shri Prabhat Kumar stressed that “Along with a Viksit Bharat, we must also build a Naitik Bharat.” He added that whatever we do, we should strive to go one step beyond our capabilities.

The Chancellor outlined the vision of the Centre, which will integrate ethics into education across disciplines, foster research in collaboration with national and international partners, develop principled leadership, and engage with local communities including UMU’s five adopted villages. In his keynote address, Dr. Amit Mukherjee highlighted the urgent need for ethics in governance, business, science, and technology, and spoke about the importance of self-discipline and maintaining a balance between life, family, and work. He praised Usha Martin University for institutionalizing ethics education to produce not just skilled professionals but also responsible citizens.

An Advisory Board comprising eminent figures such as Prof. R.A. Mashelkar and Prof. Sunil Shukla will guide the Centre’s activities. The annual calendar includes quarterly lectures by thought leaders, development of case studies, regular workshops, podcasts, and panel discussions to create sustained conversations on ethics within and beyond the campus.

Following the ceremony, Shri Prabhat Kumar interacted with students and faculty members, visited the Central Library, and suggested adding more books on ethics. He encouraged everyone to practice ethics and imbibe it in daily life.
