To mark the 125th death anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the Usha Martin University organized a commemorative program on June 9, 2025. The program aimed to pay homage to the legendary tribal leader and freedom fighter who sacrificed his life in the fight against British colonialism and social injustice.

Birsa Munda, affectionately called “Dharti Aba” (Father of the Earth), emerged as a charismatic leader during the late 19th century in the Chotanagpur region. His movement, known as the Ulgulan (The Great Tumult), was not only a revolt against oppressive colonial policies and exploitative landlords but also a call for social reform and cultural revival among tribal societies. His unwavering fight for land ownership rights, forest conservation, religious freedom, and tribal identity resonates even today in discourses on social justice and indigenous rights.

The event sought to:
• Educate students and faculty about the life, ideology, and sacrifices of Birsa Munda.
• Promote awareness of tribal history and rights.
• Encourage respect for indigenous contributions to the freedom struggle.

At the end of the Programme, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Hon’ble Pro-Chancellor, Hon’ble Register, and Dean of Usha Martin University emphasized, integrating the history of tribal heroes like Birsa Munda into mainstream academic discourse. The event successfully fostered an atmosphere of learning, reflection, and pride in India’s diverse history.
